How to Choose THE Photo

Soon it will be that time of year I love the most -- when cards arrive each day from friends and family and we get to rush to the door to open them with great anticipation. I see holiday cards as mini-gifts.

Chevy Chase MD Photographer

I love opening the cards to see how family, friends and clients have grown and what they have chosen to highlight from their year - - I open envelopes with anticipation, ready for the card that makes me laugh, cry or the photo that just jumps out of the envelope with love.

Do you want to give this gift to your friends and family? Here are a few tips on putting together your holiday card....

ONE:  What is your favorite family photo from the year?  I bet it is one that makes you happy looking at it because it was a precious moment in a special place. Use this one!

TWO:  Think about what you want to express. I always ask clients, prior to their shoot, what mood they want from their photos? Same with your card. Think about what you are trying to relay from that year - joy, peace, love.  Do you want it to be full of life, silly or serene? There are cards for every mood and your photo can express that as well.

THREE:  Not everyone needs to be looking at the camera! Let’s look at an example…. While the classic holiday card has everyone looking at the camera, I challenge you to dare to expand on that and use something more captivating.  Movement is a fun thing to think about using!

A standard card photo.......                                                    But, look at how much more fun and engaging this one is!

FOUR:  Don’t be afraid to go outside of the box!  It doesn't have to be anymore expensive to go custom than it is to get something online from the “big box” companies. A few boutique stationers I would recommend: Georgetown Paperie, DabneyLee, MaisondePapier, BrakeInk, CBuxtonDesigns)

FIVE: For impact, use one photo.

SIX:   It will always look better to print your photo and paste it on to the card - - don't be afraid to go old school and spend the extra hour and paste on the photo! The photo itself will be better and the card will be extra special - - remember, think of it as a little gift you are sending your family and friends!

SEVEN:  If you worked with a photographer, ask them for advice. Most photographers, like me, want to discuss the portraits with you and they can help figure out which to select for difference purposes including holiday cards.  This is one of my favorite things to do for my clients!

What is the #1 Thing You Should Do When Preparing for Your Family Photo Session?

I have a long write-up I give my clients about how to prepare for their sessions....the question I'm asked the most often is "what should I wear"....but I will tell you a secret, there is really only one important thing you need to do to make it the best photo session ever.

R E L A X

Just be calm. Don't worry. I am a mom, I have seen it all. I don't care how your house looks, I don't care how your children act.  I know how to deal with it all.... and I know how to pose you to look your best (yes, even you, mom, who just gave birth).

I will assure you, if you are calm and relaxed, your children will behave, you will look beautiful, it will be a happy experience, and you will (even) have fun! I promise you....people walk away from sessions saying it was fun (or sometimes "it was not as bad as I thought it would be" haha....which I actually consider a huge compliment!)

So, just R E L A X.

You do not need to tell you child to look at me. You do not need to tell them to smile. You do not need to re-model and re-decorate your home before I come. You do not need to have a sleepless night before the session.

You do need to sleep. You do need to wake up with a heart full of joy, you do need to kiss and hug your family, you do need to sit back, trust me, and let me be in control. I am here to do the work and you are here to enjoy your family.

I promise you, you will love the outcome.

JOY runs in the family | Washington D.C. Family Portraits

WOW...wow....what an honor to be able to photograph this family. The joy and love was palable.

Currently, during my sessions, I am finding myself so drawn to the mother's that I am photographing. I catch them during sessions looking at their family, in between moments, with the wind in their hair, smiling....it is incredibly natural....and special.

Senior Portraits of a Special Kind

I was lucky enough to make senior portraits for my amazing niece when she was visiting for Thanksgiving.... an athlete, singer, performer and all around amazing soul.

What a special time to capture these teens as they head off to a new chapter and really become adults living on their own. I think back often (maybe way to often haaa) about what a fun and exciting adventure college was. I was lucky enough to have one of the best college experiences one could ask for.   I am hoping this for my sweet niece and all those embarking on this adventure, too!

Loving Family

I am so lucky to call this family, family. I am eternally grateful they came into our family and the special bond we have created is so important to me. They are sweet, loving, caring, kind, unselfish.... and F U N... and we talk until our eyelids droop and then pick up the next day just where we stopped.

With a View

This family choose one of the coolest locations in DC for their shoot and I was SO excited. I loved using this modern apartment building for the shoot. The sun was high in the sky and the love palpable.

Everyone Gathers During Summer

This has been my busiest summer yet which means I have been.... sweating.... A lot.....I am so grateful for the work I have been given this summer which included awesome travel and new clients.

One thing that has stood out during the summer months and the travel - Love and support. I felt so surrounded by love and support this summer as I was joyfully hoping from place to place. I feel so fortunate. And I am so grateful.

Now I feel ready to take on the Fall! (More summer photos to be posted though :)))))

Time .... Timeless

I was reading a write up by black and white photographer, Jason Peterson and was totally inspired. I love what he said about black and white photography,

"black and white photography erases time from the equation"
