How to Stay Calm Before a Family Photoshoot

As a mom myself and family photographer, I understand that preparing for a photoshoot can sometimes feel overwhelming.

But, really, the most powerful thing is NOT to worry…because, I got you!

Here is some advice on how you can stay calm and enjoy the process, ensuring beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. So let's dive in and uncover the secrets to an stress-free family photoshoot!

Embrace the Chaos

We all know that family life can be wonderfully chaotic….Embrace the quirks and let your true selves shine through during the shoot. The more authentic you are, the more genuine and heartwarming your photos will be. So, don't worry if your little one decides to show off their silly dance moves or your pet insists on being the center of attention. These spontaneous moments often become the highlights of the shoot! (And, guess what? I have seen and heard it all! remember, I have three kids of my own, have been in business for 13 years and have had sessions with thousands of families!)

Plan Ahead

To avoid any last-minute panic, it's really good to plan ahead. Choose the outfits for your family members a few days in advance, taking into account any desired themes or color coordination (remember coordination over matching! and get my style guide!). Make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident in their chosen attire (esp. if they are new clothes! AND less than ideal outfits are better than the “attitude” that may come from pressuring a teen to wear what YOU want….). Plus, remember that accidents happen, so it's wise to pack some spare clothes for the little ones, just in case. Moms, do not not forget about YOU!!! Don’t just plan ahead for everyone else and leave yourself last, you will be most calm if you have planned well for yourself and are feeling confident and put together.

Snacks and Bribery

Food is an incredible motivator, especially when it comes to little ones. Pack some snacks and treats to keep everyone fueled and happy throughout the session. You'll be amazed at how much cooperation you can achieve with a bag of gummy bears or a delicious cookie. Besides, it's a great way to incorporate some candid and joyful moments into your photos!

Prepare Props and Activities

Inject some fun and personality into your photos by bringing along props and activities that reflect *your family's interests*. Whether it's a soccer ball, favorite books, or even a picnic blanket, props can add an extra touch of creativity and create wonderful memories. These props can serve as conversation starters and help everyone relax and feel at ease during the shoot.

Relax and Trust Your Photographer

Remember, you've chosen your photographer for a reason. They have the skills and expertise to capture beautiful moments. Trust in their vision and let them guide you through the process. Good photographers have a knack for making even the most camera-shy individuals feel comfortable. They'll ensure that your family's unique dynamics are captured in the most delightful way.

Preparing for a family photoshoot can be an enjoyable and stress-free experience when approached with the right mindset. Embrace the chaos, plan ahead, and don't forget to bring some snacks and props along! Remember, these photos are a celebration of your family's love and connection, so let your true selves shine through. By staying calm and trusting your photographer, you'll create cherished memories that will warm your hearts for years to come. Can’t wait to work with you!
